Picture this: stepping off a scenic train from Innsbruck, the anticipation of exploring Zurich, probably Switzerland’s most famous city. With bags stowed away in a convenient locker one level below the main station, we sauntered into town, ready to see the sights. And let me tell you, Zurich did not disappoint.
A Sweet Treat at Bachmann
First things first, we were in Switzerland, the land of heavenly chocolate. So, naturally, our first stop was the renowned Bachmann chocolate shop, conveniently located a stone’s throw away from the central train station. As we entered, we were greeted by three floors of aromatic coffee, delicious looking pastries, and, of course, Swiss chocolates! The ground floor tempted us with its takeaway treats, while the first floor presented a traditional shopping experience, albeit with a flowing chocolate wall think Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory here. Finally, we settled on the top floor, a cool cafe where we indulged in an almond croissant and refreshing coke. The weather was a bit hot for chocolates, but that croissant hit the spot just right, maybe worth coming back here in the winter?
Züri Fäscht: A Festival Jackpot
Refreshed by our sweet treat, we ventured further into the heart of Zurich, only to stumble upon a festival that would make any traveler’s heart skip a beat. Züri Fäscht, held every three years, was in full swing as we arrived. Streets were closed to traffic, transforming into bustling pedestrian zones. Dragon boat races took place on the river, food vendors lined the streets, tempting us with some amazing smells. Music came from every corner, in particular drawing us closer to a small square where a vibrant youth orchestra filled the air with an eclectic mix of tunes. With the scorching heat, a pop-up bar right opposite the stage had some refreshing Capriniahs on offer. So our plans kinda went out the window, but who needs them when you stumble on unexpected experiences like this?
Exploring Zurich’s Architecture
After immersing ourselves in the atmosphere of Züri Fäscht, we took a wee stroll to explore Zurich’s architectural wonders. It being a Sunday, most shops were closed, but the city’s architectural beauty is open for admiration any day of the week. From the old town to the modern marvels dotting the landscape, Zurich’s architecture is a testament to its rich history and contemporary flair. We couldn’t help but stop and gaze at the intricate details and timeless elegance that surrounded us.
A Farewell and a Promise
As our day in Zurich neared its end, we made our way to the train station, ready to continue the journey home. The Swiss public transportation system proved to be cheap, fast, and reliable, getting us to the airport in less than 15minutes (who needs a taxi). Although our visit was brief, we had gained a glimpse of what this city had to offer. And Zurich, you have left a lasting impression.
In just six short hours, Zurich had indulged us with its sweet treats, energetic festival, awe-inspiring architecture, and the promise of even more adventures to come. So, if you find yourself passing through, do yourself a favor and immerse yourself in everything Zuni’s city has to offer. Trust me, you won’t regret it.
